The Cinderwake
Public — The Festival
On the last night of Harvestmonth the vale builds rafts of husk and sweepings on the town shore, and at dusk they are lit and let go on the river. The custom is older than the town, and the children are taught so. A good Cinderwake is a slow one, and the rafts should burn all the way past the Old Reach bend before they gutter; when one dies early, the boatmen say the river has swallowed its luck.
The mill closes for the day, the only day in the year it does. The Wicklight taps the festival dark at noon, and the guild pays for the first round, as it has every year, to the copper.
